The AIPP committee recognized “Vigilance” a monument at Olive Hills Dog Park honoring the Anaheim Police Department’s canine unit. This beautiful bronze statue by nationally renowned artist Susan Bahary, was the second in the City.
Both life size sculptures were inspired by a 2014 incident in which Anaheim Police K-9 officer Bruno was shot in the line of duty. Bruno survived the shooting and months of recovery, became an international sensation with an outpouring of public support.
The sculptures were funded by a grassroots effort. Residents led the Kash For Canines’ fundraising effort. The Anaheim/Orange County Hotel Industry led the way with a $25,000 gift in addition to donations from a multitude of local businesses, organizations and individuals. Even local children gave change in a touching show of support.
Both monuments today remind us of the bravery and courage demonstrated every day by the Anaheim Police Department’s Canine Unit.
