The Sally White Award is presented in recognition of an individual’s dedication to supporting the goals of Anaheim Beautiful, through involvement in civic, social, philanthropic and historical organizations, seeking ways to strengthen the mission of Anaheim Beautiful by making Anaheim a better city. Sally White was someone who worked diligently to pull the city and community together to achieve greater accomplishments for the betterment of Anaheim. This year’s award goes to Marge Herman.
Marge has been married to her husband Bob for 59 years. They moved their family from Illinois to Anaheim in 1972. They became franchisees of the 7-Eleven on the corner of Ball and Gilbert in Anaheim and had that store for 44 years. Sponsoring local sports teams and providing donations to neighborhood school fundraisers, was just the beginning. Through 7-Eleven, Marge became involved with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and served on their local Board of Directors. She was involved with the MDA for more than 25 years. The Herman family’s 7-Eleven was known as a “neighborhood store”, having fundraisers, carwashes and Girl Scout cookie stands. A group of neighbors used the parking lot to gather and discuss neighborhood issues, bringing their own lawn chairs. These meetings were the embers that sparked the formation of the West Anaheim Neighborhood Community Development. (WAND.) Marge was a member of the Women’s Division of the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce where she served as vice president and was awarded the prestigious “Annie Accolade” award. She was also an active member of the Anaheim Assistance League and a board member with the Halcyon Anaheim Interfaith Shelter and enjoyed her time as a “Red Coat” for the Anaheim Visitors Convention Bureau. About 10 years ago, Marge became involved in the Anaheim Police Department and is currently part of the VIPs (Volunteers in Police Service) program. She enjoys patrolling neighborhoods, doing vacation checks and working special events such as the Anaheim Flag Day Celebration and Taste of Anaheim. You can find her volunteering at other Anaheim events throughout the year including the National Night Out, Chili Cook Off, bake sales, etc. She is a current member of Anaheim Beautiful and has encouraged many of her friends to join as well participating actively in our organization’s community events including the Painting of Hope project, Holiday Lights Contest and the Candy Canine Contest at the Anaheim Nutcracker Holiday event. Marge instilled the importance of giving back to others while raising her children and is very proud of the Miss Anaheim Beautiful Scholarship program which her daughter Debbie founded. And Debbie keeps both her Mom and her Dad busy with that. Marge lives by the philosophy. “Your time is a gift you can share with others….it doesn’t cost money, but the impact to others is immeasurable.”
