So many people go the extra mile with no request of recognition or expectation of anything in return. They give what they give solely because of a deep commitment and dedication to their community. This is the reason for Anaheim Beautiful’s Unsung Hero Award, to give this recognition that is so well deserved. This year the honor went to Mike Lozeau, Anaheim Police Sergeant. Mike served in the California Army National Guard as a Military Police Officer beginning in 1986 until his honorable discharge in 1989. He was sworn in as a police officer for the City of Tustin in July 1988, then joined that Anaheim Police Department in 1990. While serving the Tustin community, he received an award for a large drug bust resulting from a vehicle stop. As a police officer for Anaheim he worked several specialized assignments; K-9, SWAT, Field Training Office, Family Crimes and Sexual Assault Detective Details arresting several sex offenders in our community. He was promoted to sergeant in 2001 and has supervised several specialized assignments; K-9, Under-cover Vice, Burglary and Central District Community Policing Team. He assisted in one of the largest illegal massage parlor operations across the County of Orange which included human trafficking of women. In 2013, Sgt. Lozeau was instrumental in initiating the newly formed Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) and the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) where he has assisted with helping over 1,800 get off the streets and into safe housing and another 5,000 suffering from mental illness. Sgt. Lozeau also created the Homeless Liaison Office (HLO) course and is the only instructor for the Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) for the California Peace Officers’ Associations teaching other police officers how to partner with non-profit organizations to help with outreach and use enforcement as a last resort, always focusing on getting people off the streets into housing. In his off duty time, he gives back to the community as the head coach for the Anaheim Jr. Ducks travel ice hockey team and helped start the new Placentia/Yorba Linda “Panthers” high school ice hockey team. He has won back-to-back championships with Jr. Ducks and has taught all his players about character, teamwork and the importance of a higher education. Many players throughout the years come and see Mike on the ice to thank him for coaching and mentoring them, excited to tell him about how well they are doing in school and hockey. He has played in the Police and Fire World Olympics and has won several Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. He has two beautiful children, Natalie, age 19 and Mitchell, age 16. He and his fiancé Sandra will be married this fall and Sgt. Lozeau will retire from the Anaheim Police Department on August 22 of this year. He will be sorely missed but his contributions will long remain.
